Substitutions and Additions
Here are a few of my favorite tried and true swaps and additions for this delicious homemade bread recipe.
- Make this a walnut streusel by adding extra chopped walnuts to the topping or change the nuts to pecans if you prefer.
- Whole wheat flour can be used in place of the all-purpose flour for this recipe.
- Out of nutmeg? Swap out the cinnamon and nutmeg and use pumpkin pie spice instead.
How To Store
Storage – Store your banana bread in an airtight container or wrapped in plastic wrap on the counter for 2-3 days.
Freezing – Did you know that banana bread freezes well? Slice the banana bread wrap the slices in plastic wrap, then in aluminum foil, and then place them in a freezer-safe bag for up to three months. Thaw on the counter for a couple of hours before enjoying.
Sandra’s Pro Tips
- Don’t have ripe bananas on hand? You can speed up the ripening process by placing them in a brown paper bag on the kitchen counter overnight.
- I always use unsalted butter for baking. If you don’t have unsalted butter on hand you can use salted butter instead.
- This is the perfect recipe to use as gifts during the holiday season. Use mini loaf pans to make several loaves of banana bread to share with your friends and neighbors. Just reduce the cooking time so that they don’t overcook.
- You can use a fork or a pastry cutter to mash up the bananas.

No, while both streusel topping and crumb topping are made with a combination of flour, sugar, and butter they usually have slight differences such as the addition of cinnamon to the streusel topping.
I like to spread butter or cream cheese on top of my slices of banana bread. However, it’s also great with peanut butter or Nutella.
It is done baking when a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. You can also gently press on the top of the bread – if it springs back, it’s done.
