Homemade Dressing Ingredients

  • Mayonnaise—I prefer the flavor of mayo instead of Miracle Whip for this creamy Italian dressing. However, you can use Miracle Whip if you prefer.
  • Red wine vinegar – This adds a nice flavor to the tangy dressing.
  • Seasonings – You will need garlic powder, Italian seasoning mix, red pepper flakes, salt, and ground pepper.

Salad Ingredients

  • Iceberg lettuce – Iceberg is one of the main ingredients of an Italian sub. However, romaine lettuce would also work. You’ll need a half a head.
  • Red onion – White onion or sweet onion would also work in this salad.
  • Mozzarella cheese: I love the mild flavor of mozzarella, but provolone cheese would also add a nice tang to the salad.
  • Cherry tomatoes – Grape tomatoes would also work well in this tasty salad.
  • Pepperoncini peppers – Want a milder pepper? You can use banana peppers instead.
  • Cold cuts – You will need turkey, ham, and salami to make this easy grinder salad recipe.

What To Serve With This Dish

This Italian grinder salad is delicious on its own. However, you can also serve it as a side for grilled chicken with avocado salsagrilled ribeye steak, or BBQ New Orleans style shrimp, to add a fresh and tangy protein to your plate. No matter what you decide, this vibrant salad will complement any meal.

Substitutions and Additions

  • Swap out mozzarella for provolone, parmesan, or even sharp cheddar for a different flavor profile.
  • Feel free to add or substitute a mix of Italian meats or your favorite deli meats, such as roasted chicken, prosciutto, or even crispy bacon, for extra crunch.
  • Instead of chopping the lettuce you could shred the lettuce.
  • For more color and nutrition, try adding bell peppers, cucumbers, or shredded carrots.
  • Use a creamy Caesar dressing, balsamic vinaigrette, or spicy chipotle mayo to change things up.

How To Store

To store your Italian grinder salad, place it in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days. For the best texture and flavor, I recommend that you store the dressing separately and toss it with the salad just before serving. This prevents the lettuce and other fresh ingredients from becoming soggy.

Sandra’s Pro Tips

  • To keep your salad crisp and fresh, always dry your lettuce thoroughly after washing. A salad spinner works great for this!
  • If you’re preparing this salad for a party, assemble all the ingredients ahead of time, but wait to toss it with the dressing until just before serving.
  • Use freshly cracked black pepper and high-quality deli meats and cheeses for an extra burst of flavor!
  • Don’t be afraid to customize! This recipe is super versatile, so get creative with your favorite ingredients.
