How to Make This Air Fryer Parmesan Crusted Chicken Recipe

  1. Make your dredging station. You will need three dishes. One for flour, another one for egg wash, and a final one for the breadcrumb and parmesan cheese mixture.

  1. Bread the thin sliced chicken breasts, by dipping them in the flour first, then the egg wash, and finally the breadcrumbs and parmesan cheese mixture.

  1. Cook the chicken in the preheated air fryer for 10 minutes. Flipping halfway through.

  1. Top the cooked chicken breast with ¼ cup marinara and ¼ cup mozzarella cheese. Then return to the air fryer for 1 minute or until the cheese is completely melted and the chicken is cooked through.

Substitutions and Additions

  • Don’t have chicken breasts on hand? You can use chicken tenderloins to make parmesan chicken tenders. Boneless skinless chicken thighs would also work. However, you will adjust the cooking time accordingly.
  • I used regular Italian seasoned bread crumbs for this recipe. You can also use panko breadcrumbs as well. 
  • Instead of using shredded mozzarella cheese, you can use a slice of mozzarella cheese to cover the top of the chicken. 

How To Store

Storage – Store leftover chicken in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2-3 days. I like to store it without the tomato sauce and cheese on top so that the breadcrumbs don’t become soggy. 

Freezing – You can also freeze the chicken in a storage bag or freezer-safe container for up to three months. You can air fry it straight from the freezer to reheat it, no need to thaw it. 

Reheating – I’ve found that the best way to reheat the chicken parmesan is in the air fryer. Reheat it in a 350-degree air fryer for 3-5 minutes or until warm all the way through.

  • Don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket, place the chicken in a single layer with space in between the pieces of chicken so that the air fryer cooks all sides of the chicken at the same time.
  • Use an instant-read meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the chicken before removing it from the air fryer. It needs to reach 165 degrees in the thickest portion of the chicken breast to be safe to eat. 
  • I like to spray the air fryer basket with nonstick cooking spray so that the breading from the chicken doesn’t stick to the basket. You don’t want to lose all that crunchy goodness.

Ingredients

  • 2 large chicken breasts butterfly sliced in half to make 4
  • ¼ cup all purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper

Instructions

  • Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees.

  • In a second shallow plate, mix together the breadcrumbs, parmesan cheese, italian seasoning and garlic powder. Set aside.
  • Coat the chicken breasts one at a time coating them in the flour mixture first, dipping into the egg mixture and finally covering in the breadcrumb mixture.
  • Place the coated chicken breasts in the preheated air fryer.
  • Cook for 10 minutes, flipping once halfway through cooking time.
  • Top each chicken breast with about ¼ cup marinara and ¼ cup mozzarella cheese.
  • Continue cooking for 1 additional minute or until cheese is melted and chicken is cooked through and reaches 165 degrees.
