Substitutions and Additions
- Don’t have chicken breasts on hand? You can use chicken tenderloins to make parmesan chicken tenders. Boneless skinless chicken thighs would also work. However, you will adjust the cooking time accordingly.
- I used regular Italian seasoned bread crumbs for this recipe. You can also use panko breadcrumbs as well.
- Instead of using shredded mozzarella cheese, you can use a slice of mozzarella cheese to cover the top of the chicken.
How To Store
Storage – Store leftover chicken in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2-3 days. I like to store it without the tomato sauce and cheese on top so that the breadcrumbs don’t become soggy.
Freezing – You can also freeze the chicken in a storage bag or freezer-safe container for up to three months. You can air fry it straight from the freezer to reheat it, no need to thaw it.
Reheating – I’ve found that the best way to reheat the chicken parmesan is in the air fryer. Reheat it in a 350-degree air fryer for 3-5 minutes or until warm all the way through.
Sandra’s Pro Tips
- Don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket, place the chicken in a single layer with space in between the pieces of chicken so that the air fryer cooks all sides of the chicken at the same time.
- Use an instant-read meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the chicken before removing it from the air fryer. It needs to reach 165 degrees in the thickest portion of the chicken breast to be safe to eat.
- I like to spray the air fryer basket with nonstick cooking spray so that the breading from the chicken doesn’t stick to the basket. You don’t want to lose all that crunchy goodness.
