Cara Cara Margarita

Cara Cara Margarita is made with seasonal sweet and juicy, cara cara oranges and simple fresh ingredients!

Cara Cara Margarita - The Foodie Affair

Last year I tasted these oranges for the first time. I saw them at a produce stand, and I probably would have passed by them if they didn’t have a couple sliced open so you could see the gorgeous ruby orange color they have!

I wasn’t sure if they would taste tart like a grapefruit, and boy was I pleasantly surprise by how sweet they are!  Even the soft spongy pith is palatable.

I have since learned that most of the fruit trees come from California, and the season is short lived, so if you see them available, pick some up!

Cara Cara Margarita

The oranges are a cross between the Washington navel and the Brazilian Bahia navel. They’re seedless with lower acidity than regular oranges.  Sounds exotic and fancy, and in some areas they may only be available in gourmet grocery stores, but I was lucky to get them at a produce stand 69 cents a pound!

Cara Cara Margarita

You need about 2 ounces of the freshly squeezed juice for each drink, which is about 1 large orange.

Shake up some margaritas for Cinco de Mayo festivities or perhaps a retirement celebration is more appropriate.  🙂

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces Cara Cara orange juice
  • 1 1/2 ounces tequila
  • 1 ounce orange liquor or triple sec
  • lime juice 1/2 lime squeezed on each drink
  • Cara Cara orange wedge and basil for garnish

Instructions

  • Wet the edge of your glass with the juice of an orange, and dip in kosher salt. Set aside.
  • Add juice, tequila, triple sec to a cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake vigorously.
  • Strain into a prepared glass filled with ice.
  • Garnish with ogre wedge and basil.

Notes

If you are used to a very sweet drink, you may want to add 1/2 ounce of sweetener like simple syrup (1 part sugar, 1 part water).
If cara caras are unavailable, you could use blood oranges instead.

  1. We are in OC so my goal this weekend is to find a farmers market where they carry these oranges. I don’t think I’ve ever tried them for some reason. These in a margarita sound incredible so I can’t wait to try, thanks!

  2. The oranges are a really vibrant and gorgeous colour. It seems you picked up quite a bargain at roadside stall. I love how you made margaritas with the oranges. They look beautiful with the skewered garnishes xx

  3. Oh, I love the look of these! Margaritas are my favorite cocktail and I bet they’re spectacular using Cara Cara oranges!

  4. Sandra your Cara Cara margarita sounds amazing and it would be the perfect accompaniment to my Tex Mex Ahi. I do not think I have seen cara Cara oranges in HK but have you ever tried Taiwan’s green oranges that are super sweet? I bet that would be a good exchange for those of us living here in Asia. Have a super week. Just pinned! Your photos are stunning! Take Care, BAM

    1. Oh, I would love to try a Taiwan green orange! I’m going to have to keep an eye out at our Asian stores just in case they get some. Thanks, Bam and have a great weekend. I’m off to check out your Ahi dish!
