SUBSTITUTIONS AND ADDITIONS
Chocolate – use your favorite; milk, semi-sweet or dark chocolate to make this recipe. I like dark or semi-sweet. Also consider some of the flavored chips like mint or peanut butter chips. No chips? Break up chocolate bars as an alternative to the chocolate chips.
Nuts – Sprinkle in your favorite nuts before you drizzle the chocolate over the popcorn for chocolate-covered nut popcorn clusters.
Toppings – Add some extra treats like M&M candies, crushed peppermint candy canes, mini marshmallows or chopped pretzels.
TIPS AND TRICKS
Make sure to drizzle the melted chocolate over the popcorn as quickly as possible before it cools and hardens into a chunk instead of a drizzle.
If you don’t have white or milk chocolate chips, go ahead and use dark. However, if you do have all three kinds, then you can create this recipe with three different flavors of popcorn!
Stove Top Popcorn – If you are popping your popcorn on the stovetop, drip a teaspoon of oil into a pot on medium-high. Add one popcorn kernel and wait for it to pop. Immediately add 1/2 cup kernels. Cover with lid and shake over heat until all kernels have popped. Be sure to keep the lid slightly ajar to prevent condensation on your popcorn.
Air Fryer Popcorn – Did you know that you can pop popcorn in the air fryer? You can! If you want to give air fryer popcorn a try for this recipe find the directions here.
Chocolate Covered Popcorn – Want to make chocolate-covered popcorn instead? Place half of the popped popcorn in a paper bag or large stock pan with a lid. Add half of the melted chocolate and the remaining popcorn. Top with the rest of the chocolate. Secure bag or cover with the lid and shake vigorously until the popcorn is coated with the melted chocolate.
