Substitutions and Additions

Here are a few tried and true swaps that you can use to personalize this recipe to your tastes.

  • Watching your sugar intake? Switch out the white sugar for your favorite low-carb sweetener, it will work just as well.  Coconut sugar or brown sugar would even work well.  I have used a mix of monk fruit and allulose.
  • Instead of plain pecans try using candied pecans, bourbon pecans, or salty nuts to change up the flavor.
  • Add a pinch of salt to give the syrup a sweet and salty contrast.
  • For a spicy version, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the syrup for a little kick.
  • Instead of maple extract, you could use a splash of pure maple syrup to give the maple flavor instead.
  • Other great flavors to add to this simple recipe are a dash of pumpkin pie spice, apple pie spice, or cinnamon and nutmeg.
  • Instead of pecans feel free to experiment with different nuts, walnuts would also work great.
