Red White and Blue Layered Shot Cocktail

Red White and Blue Layered Shot Cocktail - The Foodie Affair
These little parfait glasses are perfect for a layered shot.

This Red White and Blue Layered Shot Cocktail is festive and fun drink to add to patriotic themed event like Memorial Day or Fourth of July gatherings.

I had lots of fun experimenting with the layers as some of you saw on The Foodie Affair’s Facebook page.

I started out using a large glass, then as the testing and experimenting moved along, I decided to go shooter style.

Aren’t these just ADORABLE??!!  These can be made with or without alcohol depending on what kind of mood you are in, and who you’re sharing with.

Add ice to help the layers ease on top of each other

Let me give you the basics.

First, add ice. It helps to slow the liquid down when poured into the glass, easing it in place.

You don’t want to create a splash. The first layer is the simplest, since it goes right to the bottom like you want it to.

How To Add The Red, White And Blue Layers

Now comes the trickier part, the second layer.

Here’s the important part that you need to know, add the liquid with the highest  sugar content first.

The next layer should have less sugar in it so that it floats on top of the heavier liquid.

To ease the second layer into the glass, place a spoon upside down over the glass and slowly pour the liquid on the spoon letting it drizzle on the ice and on top of the first layer.

Take your time and don’t rush the pouring part, otherwise you’ll mix the colors, and just in case you forgot, red and blue turns purple 😉

The layered combinations can be endless, and as long as you stay with the sugar ratio rule your results will be successful!

Go test out different liquids and create your own festive beverage!  To learn more about how this layering works read this.

Top with whipped cream and a little sprinkle or too for a festive touch

I didn’t measure out anything, just eyeballed how I thought I wanted the red, blue and white to look.

These can me made with or without alcohol.

Grenadine will also work well as a first layer (click here for homemade recipe – use sugar), and blue gatorade as a second layer.

Also, I’ve read that diet sprite or 7-up (not regular because it has too much sugar) works well as a second layer.

Since it’s clear it’s easy to create a different color by adding a few drops of food coloring.

Have  a safe Fourth of July holiday!
