HOW TO MAKE THIS AUTHENTIC CHURROS RECIPE

While churros may seem daunting to make at home, the process is actually quite simple. The simple choux pastry dough is made from flour, water, sugar, and salt, and it is fried in oil until it is golden brown. Once the traditional Spanish churros are cooked, they are rolled in sugar and served hot. With just a few ingredients and a little patience, you can easily make authentic churros at home.

STEP 1: BOIL WATER, SUGAR, VANILLA, BUTTER, AND SALT IN A MEDIUM SAUCEPAN

In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of water, vanilla, butter, sugar, and salt; bring to a boil over medium-high heat.

STEP 2: SLOWLY ADD THE FLOUR

Reduce heat to low, and add sifted flour stirring for 1 minute.

STEP 3: TRANSFER DOUGH TO A MIXING BOWL

Put the mixture in a medium bowl.

STEP 4: BEAT IN EGGS ONE AT A TIME

On low speed, add eggs, 1 at a time, beating until incorporated after each addition (dough should look soft and glossy).

STEP 5: ADD THE DOUGH MIXTURE TO A PASTRY BAG

Spoon the mixture into a pastry bag with a large star tip.

STEP 6: HEAT OIL IN A LARGE SKILLET OR POT

Heat oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven on medium-high heat. The oil should reach 350°F degrees before adding the batter. Keep the temperature between 350°F – 400°F degrees.

STEP 7: PIPE BATTER INTO THE HOT OIL

Carefully pipe out the churro dough into a couple of inch lengths or the size of the pan, but do not overcrowd the pan.

STEP 8: FRY THE CHURROS

Fry, flipping once, until deep golden brown all over. Using a slotted spoon, transfer churros to a paper towel-lined baking sheet to drain.

STEP 9: ROLL IN CINNAMON SUGAR MIXTURE

  • Dulce de leche
  • Whipped cream

TIPS

  • Use a pastry bag fitted with a star tip to pipe the dough into the hot oil. This will help to create the traditional churro shape.
  • Be sure to sift the flour before adding it to the wet ingredients. This will help to prevent lumps in the dough.
  • Fry the churros in batches so that they have enough space to cook evenly. overcrowding the pan will result in uneven cooking.
  • Serve the churros immediately after frying for the best results. They are best when they are hot and fresh.
  • You can also use a deep fryer if you have one on hand.
  • If you don’t have a piping bag on hand, you can use a plastic bag and cut the corner off to make a homemade piping bag.
  • For best results use a candy thermometer to make sure the temperature of the oil is 350°F – 400°F degrees before deep frying your churros. Adjust the heat to maintain that temperature.
