Fruit Salsa

I shared this fruit salsa on The Foodie Affair’s Facebook page while I was visiting family in Nevada. It’s an appetizer that I have made so often that I have the recipe memorized.

This recipe is from a Pampered Chef cookbook that I purchased over 15 years ago! It came as a set with a hand chopper, which I happen to still have from one of the many parties I went to during those days.

Pampered Chef has cleverly created recipes that suggest what knives, serving dishes, and pre packaged spices you should use when making the recipe.

Such a brilliant marketing strategy!

The hand chopper definitely saves some time when making this salsa, and for some reason kids like to pound the lever and help chop.

Although you will find that a simple pairing knife works just as well when dicing up the fruit.

How To Make Fruit Salsa

This recipe is easy. Chop, add a sweetener and jam or jelly, mix and serve!

Ingredients:

  • Fresh apples – Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, Honeycrisp, Fuji, Gala all work well
  • Kiwi
  • Strawberries
  • Orange
  • Brown sugar or brown sugar alternative
  • Jam or jelly – sugar free works great
  • Cinnamon tortilla or pita chips

Kitchen Tools Needed:

  • Hand chopper or pairing knife
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Measuring spoons
  • Rubber spatula

How To Keep Apples From Turning Brown

Any citrus like orange, lemon, lime or pineapple juice will help prevent the freshly cut apples from oxidizing.

Fresh orange juice is added to this recipe. I also often brush some orange or lemon juice on the apple while cutting to get ahead of the oxidation process.

How Long Will Fruit Salsa Last?

This salsa doesn’t last long because it is always devoured when I serve it.

However, if you have leftovers, then store it in an airtight container and use within a couple of days.

Note that the fruit will continue to release its juice naturally, so you may wish to drain a bit before serving again.

What To Serve With Fruit Salsa

I usually serve these with homemade cinnamon chips, but lately I’ve been buying pre-made cinnamon pita chips from Trader Joe’s.

Saves me some time when I’m on the go or entertaining and have other dishes to serve.

Feeling ambitious? How about making homemade pita chips?

How To Make Cinnamon Tortilla Chips

Homemade tortilla cinnamon chips are delicious and super easy to make. In fact, they are tasty on their own, so you might enjoy making these all year long.

First, prepare the cinnamon sugar by whisking together granulated sugar and ground cinnamon. Next Brush melted butter on the tortillas and sprinkle cinnamon mix on each tortilla.

Now cut each tortilla into eighths. Place on a baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes at 375 degrees.

Enjoy right away or store in an airtight container until ready to enjoy.

Can This Be Made Low Carb?

Yes! These cinnamon chips can be made with low carb tortillas and the granulated sugar can be replaced with monk fruit.

In addition, use a sugar free brown sugar replacement to mix with the diced fruit and a sugar free sweetener jam.

This sugar free strawberry freezer jam or this homemade peach freezer jam are wonderful in this recipe to lower the carbohydrates in this recipe.
